I love working from home, but if anyone thinks paying the bills by working in a home office is easy, they should think again. There is nothing easy about earning a living by generating your own leads with customers who do not know you. When I worked for a corporation, I knew what I was going to be doing every time I walked into the office. When I started working at home, my tasks were a lot more up in the air.
One of the first things I realized that I needed to change was my actual workspace. When I was in the corporate office, everything was ergonomically arranged and easy to reach. At home, I hadn’t put as much thought into where my desk was in relation to my printer or scanner. I needed to remodel my office to make it more convenient. I also wanted to work in an environment that was pleasing to me, so comfort, convenience and design were equally important.
What I learned through that process was interesting, because I discovered that there was one area that I was overlooking that made a much bigger difference than I initially realized. I had replaced the desk, rearranged the computer and printer, placed my phone just right, but I hadn’t even thought about what to do with the flooring. It never even occurred to me that I needed to do anything with the floor. However, since I was unlikely to revisit the remodeling process anytime soon, I needed to look at all of the details before I called the project complete.
The problem I had with my floor was that it was tile, and rolling an office chair across the grout channels was bumpy, and difficult. The wheels kept getting stuck, and I would lose my train of thought just trying to get my chair positioned properly. I tried a chair pad, but when I rolled from my desk to the printer, I would roll off of the pad and I was once again stuck trying to get my position back.
I considered several different styles of flooring, from carpet to wood to laminates. I didn’t want to install carpet and laminates didn’t give the room the right look to match the rest of the house. In the end, I chose a classy wood that rested flush along the seams without the grout bumps that I had been dealing with before. I placed a rug under my chair that is big enough that I can move to all of my office machinery without rolling off of the edge, so I am protecting my beautiful new flooring while enhancing the convenience of moving around my office.
Take it from me, when you embark upon your dream home office remodel, don’t overlook the importance of having the correct floor surface. No matter your style preference, there is a perfect answer to meet your home office needs.
