Feng Shui is a traditional Chinese art that works based on the principle that “chi” (a form of energy) flows through everything, and that the correct placement of furniture and other household items can affect the way that Chi flows through your home. In theory, a home with good Feng Shui should be easier to sell than a home with poor Feng Shui, as buyers get a positive vibe from your home when they come to view it.
Feng Shui Principles
One of the most basic principles of Feng Shui is keeping your home clean and clutter free. If your plants are thriving, your home is clean, and your cupboards aren’t overflowing with junk, then your hope should have fairly good chi flow – even before you start worrying about the direction your furniture faces, and whether or not your oak doors are the right color.
Clear Your Entryways
Doors are an important part of Feng Shui. You should make sure that your doors are all able to open and close freely. Once a week, open all of your doors and windows to boost the flow of Chi through your home. When you have people over to view your home, however, make sure that you close internal doors when those doors are not in use. Natural oak doors, or similar woods, are a good choice for emitting positive energy.
Try to avoid letting rooms stand empty. An empty room can build up negative chi. One way to combat this is to try to use each room for something every day, even if you just retire to that room to read a book for a few minutes. Keep empty rooms clean and tidy, and don’t use them as handy storage areas.
Light is Valuable
An abundance of natural light is always positive. There are lots of small design tricks that you can use to produce the illusion of a spacious and bright room, without negatively influencing the flow of chi in your home. For example, use yellow throws and rugs, place mirrors on the left hand side of your main door as you enter the home, and use lots of spot lighting to accent key areas of your living room.
Symmetry Counts
Another good way to improve the flow of chi in your home is to focus on symmetry. This is especially important in the bedroom, but can help with others rooms too.
Showing Off Your Home
When a prospective buyer is coming to view your home, prepare by turning on the lights in each room a few hours before the viewing. Open the windows, if you live in a fairly quiet area, but close all of your internal doors and keep them closed when the room is not in use. Make sure that the lid on the toilet seat is down and that the bathroom door in particular is always closed.
Bring viewers into the kitchen first, and work through the house going North-west first, and then south.
